A relaxing courtyard pool and outdoor hangout flanked by two structures that allow you to switch between complete privacy and seamless connectivity with the outdoors – is a perfect example of a modern home crafted to meet the specific needs of its residents.
Add to this the distinct presence of wide cedar board siding that is literally ‘stapled on’ using custom stainless steel clips and you have a home that does everything it can to ensure that the open living area is detached from the constant hustle and bustle outdoors.
A home in ecological paradise does sound like an enticing option that offers a rare window into the amazing sights and sounds of the natural world. But building a home on the edge of Niagara escarpment – a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve – is not the easiest of tasks because of the many restrictions that come with such a sensitive site rich in flora and fauna.
One can only see a hint of this modernity from the street but as you step inside the ambiance of the house moves completely away from its more traditional brick-clad exterior. White is the color of choice inside with a dash of gray adding refinement to the setting even as a flood of light from the new living area flows all the way to the front section.
The distinct exterior of the home is achieved using and dark-anodized aluminum allowing the Pleated House to interact with the changing light and shadows that are caused by the forest that engulfs it. Add to it a gorgeous green roof and the connection between the forest and the house is complete!
But as you move through the home a brick and glass ‘tunnel’ connects the old existing residence with a standalone modern addition creating a seamless transition between the past and the future! Designed by MODO this unique approach brings much more than mere renewed aesthetics with natural light flooding through the renovated interior.
What was once a dark house because of its orientation is now a light-filled environment with the novel living space being flanked by the small courtyard on one side and an inviting rear garden on the other.
